We live in a busy world, rushing to and from work, shuffling the children to after school sports, and ballet lessons. Although we may live in well-populated neighborhoods, it is possible to live on the same street for years on end and scarcely meet your neighbors. Hosting a block party is the best way to break the ice.
At block parties, neighbors set up tables on the street and usually have refreshments and music. Many neighbors will cook burgers on the grill. Well planned parties often have special events. There may be clowns, pony rides, or magicians for the children.
These Can Be Hard Work
The downside of block parties is that they tend to leave a mess behind. Decorations, plate, cans, and food can be scattered everywhere. Don’t forget to hire a clean up crew. It is usually agreed that neighbors are responsible for their lawn’s cleanup, there will still be messes in the street.
Restrictions
Before one of these events, you will need permission from your local authorities. You may need a permit. Neighbors may offer to share the expenses. It also helps to organize the event with the local police department. They might barricade the street for you.
If you live in a subdivision and have a homeowners’ association, check with them first. Their rules may be too strict. This might be a good idea to raise at the next board meeting.
Even if you don’t have this problem, it’s a good idea to get a consensus from neighbors. If more than half are unwilling to agree to it, you might want to reconsider. This doesn’t mean the party isn’t going to work, just downsize. You may find some families with connected yards want to help out!
Remember, a party is meant to be fun, so this is the time to lighten up and share a burger and a beer with the guy down the road, even if you don’t know his name. You may have some more in common than you realized. You may even make a new friend.
